A Canopy of Weaves
Featured work by Komal Mittal and Ninada Kashyap · Pune · October 6, 2026
Nestled beside a verdant hillock in Pune, A Canopy of Weaves is a 2,400 sq. ft. residence that brings the calm of its natural setting into everyday domestic life. Designed by Alkove-Design for the Verma family, the 4BHK home is conceived as a tranquil nest- open to light, breeze and views, yet warm and intimate in character.
The surrounding landscape became the starting point for the design. Rather than competing with the lush setting, the interiors adopt a restrained material palette of earthy tones, natural textures and tactile surfaces. Woven cane canopies become the defining element of the living and family areas, replacing the heavier wooden ceiling initially envisioned by the client. Light, rustic and visually porous, the cane introduces warmth while establishing a direct material connection with the landscape outside.
The home unfolds through a measured interplay of lines and curves. In the living area, a circular opening punctuates the wood-panelled backdrop, incorporating bird motifs inspired by the site's natural surroundings. Fluted surfaces and linear wall details establish subtle rhythms, while rounded doorways and curved furniture soften transitions between spaces. The living-dining area accommodates larger gatherings, while the adjoining family space offers a more intimate setting, with the scale of the woven canopies responding to each volume.
Colour becomes more expressive within the private spaces. Earthy living areas give way to individual palettes in the bedrooms- from playful blues, greens and yellows in the children's room to moss green and dusty rose in the parents' bedroom, and a deeply calming indigo in the master suite.
Throughout, carefully considered details reinforce the home's gentle architectural language. Rounded niches, geometric upholstery patterns and integrated workspaces create moments of function without disrupting the visual flow.
In a city defined by constant movement, the residence offers a slower rhythm. Sunlight filters through textured surfaces, breezes move across open volumes, and nature remains a quiet presence- turning the home into a contemporary nest shaped by light, material and memory.
