Bangladesh Chancery Complex

Perched within the Himalayan landscape of Thimphu, the Bangladesh Chancery Complex is conceived as a symbol of friendship, trust, and shared heritage between Bangladesh and Bhutan. More than a diplomatic facility, the project embodies the cultural, historical, and ecological ties that bind the two nations. At the heart of the design lies a powerful metaphor: water flowing from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal. This relationship is expressed through a reflective water court that symbolically represents the Bay of Bengal at the foothills of the mountains. The project also acknowledges Bhutan’s historic recognition of Bangladesh’s independence and the shared Buddhist legacy associated with Atish Dipankar. Responding to Bhutan’s climate, the design maximises winter sunlight while creating comfortable interior environments through passive strategies. A partially transparent glass boundary dissolves conventional notions of separation, offering visual connections between the public realm, the water court, and the distant Himalayas. The result is an architecture of openness, respect, and cultural dialogue.
