Delowar Hossain Playground

The revitalisation of Delowar Hossain Playground extends beyond physical renewal to address deeper social and cultural realities within a historic neighbourhood of Dhaka. Situated near the Buriganga River, the site exists within a complex context that includes a crematorium, a Kali temple, a cemetery, a ritual pond, and a local saint’s mausoleum, reflecting the layered histories of both Hindu and Muslim communities. Rather than focusing solely on upgrading the playground, the project sought to create a shared sense of belonging among diverse groups. Extensive community engagement informed the design process, helping transform a site marked by neglect and underlying tensions into a place of collective pride. Despite funding challenges and construction setbacks, the vision persisted through support from government agencies, private sponsors, and community stakeholders. The completed project includes an upgraded sports field with astro turf, restored water bodies, drinking water facilities, and extensive landscape interventions. More importantly, it demonstrates how architecture and public space can act as instruments of dialogue, inclusion, and social healing.
