Rising prominently along the edge of Hyderabad, the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat, redefines the architectural language of contemporary governance in India. Spread across 12 lakh sqft. and completed in 2023, the project combines monumental civic presence with sustainability-driven infrastructure and regional cultural identity. The planning of the Secretariat is deeply rooted in Vaastu principles, organising the vast institutional complex through a rectilinear framework anchored by courtyards, grand axial entries, and a carefully articulated hierarchy of spaces. The architectural expression draws from Classical Deccan Kakatiya traditions, referencing temple architecture, domes, and heritage motifs associated with Telangana’s cultural legacy. The skyline of domes and layered façades transforms the building into a symbolic landmark within the city. Beyond its visual grandeur, the project integrates a comprehensive sustainability agenda. Designed as an intelligent green building, the Secretariat incorporates passive cooling strategies, landscaped courtyards, punched openings, high-performance glazing, rainwater harvesting systems, and extensive use of renewable energy through rooftop solar installations. More than fifty percent of the site is dedicated to landscaped open spaces using native Telangana species, strengthening ecological performance while enhancing the civic character of the campus. Structurally, the project demonstrates significant engineering complexity. Post-tension slab systems, cantilevered corridors, and lightweight steel-framed domes were developed to accommodate both architectural ambition and functional efficiency. Integrated MEP systems, energy-efficient HVAC solutions, and advanced fire and safety infrastructure further reinforce the building’s high-performance approach. Awarded the IGBC Gold Rating and recognised internationally through the Green Apple Environment Awards in London, the Secretariat positions itself as more than an administrative headquarters. It emerges as a civic symbol—where governance, heritage, sustainability, and public identity converge through architecture at an unprecedented scale.
