Rooted in the agricultural heritage of Anjiang Town, the birthplace of hybrid rice, the Harvest Pavilion transforms a public structure into an architectural expression of rural identity. Designed by Li Li, Yunfeng Xiao and Yifei Shen, the pavilion in Dasheping Community is conceived as a flexible cultural and public venue where everyday community life, tourism and local agricultural memory converge. Measuring 66.1 metres in length and 30 metres in width, the pavilion accommodates cultural-tourism gatherings, performances, leisure and indoor sports. The architectural concept draws from Academician Yuan Longping’s poetic vision of “enjoying coolness under rice panicles,” translating the imagery of rice fields into a contemporary structural landscape. The flowing roof recalls the forms of rice panicles and undulating paddy fields. Rising to 11.2 metres, it shelters a column-free interior beneath a broad canopy, recreating the experience of resting beneath oversized rice plants. Approximately 40,000 round bamboo elements shape the curved roof, achieving spans of up to 15 metres while maintaining a remarkably lightweight expression. Prefabricated bamboo components were digitally modelled and factory-produced before being assembled on site, helping reduce construction waste, noise, pollution and installation time. A magnesium-based inorganic adhesive treatment provides the bamboo with a three-hour fire-resistance rating. Bamboo also establishes a strong connection with local craftsmanship and ecological responsibility. As a rapidly renewable material, it supports a lower-carbon construction approach while reinforcing Anjiang’s agricultural character. Designed for accessibility, the pavilion incorporates gentle ramps, anti-slip flooring, rest areas and facilities for children, older visitors and people with disabilities. With passive ventilation responding to the humid subtropical climate, the open pavilion becomes more than a shelter- it becomes a shared civic landscape where architecture, agriculture, craftsmanship and community life come together.
