Prerna- An Experiential Learning Centre at Vadnagar emerges as a compelling re-imagination of the vernacular school, envisioned and developed by Anant National University. Rooted in the idea of learning from tradition while embracing contemporary pedagogy, the project reflects a sensitive dialogue between past, present, and future. Initiated in 2019 as an academic and design-led exploration, the project brought together students and faculty to rethink the role of educational environments within culturally rich contexts. Through a rigorous process of design iterations, presentations, and stakeholder consultations, the final proposal evolved into a nuanced architectural response. The completed Prerna Sankul, inaugurated in January 2025 by Amit Shah, stands as a testament to collaborative thinking and contextual design. The project positions the existing vernacular school as a central “hero object,” preserving its identity while introducing a contemporary built environment that enhances learning experiences. The new Prerna building embodies a layered narrative- drawing from historical wisdom, responding to present needs, and fostering forward-looking thought. It is designed not merely as an institution, but as an immersive environment that nurtures curiosity, self-awareness, and cultural appreciation. At its core, the project redefines education as an experiential journey. Through spatial storytelling, students are encouraged to engage with the heritage of Vadnagar- its mythology, archaeology, and traditional knowledge systems- while simultaneously interacting with modern tools and technologies. This duality fosters a deeper sense of belonging, enabling students to become ambassadors of cultural awareness within their communities. More than a physical intervention, Prerna represents a transformative vision for educational infrastructure in India. It bridges the gap between heritage and innovation, creating a learning ecosystem that is inclusive, contextual, and future-ready- one that inspires young minds to reflect, connect, and contribute meaningfully to society.
