ROOH- Is Design Spot’s Office
Featured work by Selva Sidiq N · Malappuram, Kerala · December 4, 2025
Architecture as art, untamed by convention- Rooh is an evocative design studio that celebrates imperfection, emotion, and the poetry of raw materiality. Conceived as an art-house rather than a conventional workspace, the project embodies a design philosophy that embraces asymmetry, fluidity, and nature’s organic imperfections. The space is envisioned as a living canvas- where materials, light, and mood intertwine to evoke feeling rather than formality.
The conceptual foundation of Rooh- derived from the Arabic word meaning “soul”- lies in forging an emotional connection between people and the spaces they inhabit. Every design gesture seeks to capture this essence through natural light, greenery, and earthy tones that nurture calm and introspection. The architecture becomes a sensory journey—where textures, light, and shadow interact to animate the experience of being.
Material honesty lies at the heart of Rooh. The palette of exposed concrete, terracotta hues, red oxide flooring, brick jalis, demolition waste, and mild steel celebrates authenticity and tactility. Instead of concealing materials under polish or paint, the design allows them to breathe in their natural state- revealing the beauty of imperfection. Each surface, mark, and texture tells a story of time, craft, and individuality.
Spatially, Rooh rejects rigid divisions and orthogonal logic. The office flows freely, dissolving the idea of fixed boundaries. Conventional walls and ceilings are replaced with perforated jalis, planter-block partitions, and sensuous curves that create zones without confinement. Light becomes the primary architect- sweeping through round openings and casting playful shadows across concrete and terracotta planes. These shifting patterns animate the space throughout the day, blurring the line between art and architecture.
The spatial program unfolds with subtle hierarchy and emotional rhythm. The entry and waiting area, lightly defined by uneven PVC pipes, immediately sets the tone of organic unpredictability. The discussion desk stands as a sculptural centerpiece- open yet intimate, functional yet artistic. The main workstation area, illuminated by filtered daylight, offers a semi-open setting that encourages collaboration while retaining calm. Toward the rear, the space opens to a narrow alley softened with greenery- a quiet retreat framed by the rustling leaves of a drumstick tree and shaded pockets of plants that bring nature into the urban shell.
Rooh transcends the boundaries of a workplace. It is a sanctuary of ideas- a soulful space where art, architecture, and emotion converge. By embracing imperfection, celebrating material truth, and inviting nature into every corner, Rooh becomes more than a studio- it becomes an experience, a state of mind, and a reflection of the spirit within.
