S.A. Residence
Featured work by Rafiq Azam · Dhaka · July 1, 2026
S.A. Residence is among Rafiq Azam’s most philosophical works, translating ideas of memory, nature, and spirituality into built form. Conceived as a three-storey family home in the dense urban fabric of Dhaka, the project is inspired by the teachings of eighteenth-century mystic Lalon Fakir, who viewed the human body and soul as inseparable. Azam interprets architecture in a similar way, where the concrete structure forms the ‘shell’ and nature becomes the ‘soul’.
Organised around a central water court, the residence reimagines the traditional Bengali courtyard-pond typology within a contemporary urban setting. Water reflects the sky, light, birds, and changing seasons, transforming the heart of the house into a contemplative void. Natural ventilation, filtered daylight, greenery, and carefully framed views create a serene retreat from the surrounding city. Through its restrained material palette, introverted planning, and seamless integration of landscape, S.A. Residence becomes a meditation on silence, belonging, and the coexistence of architecture and nature.
