Studio Foliage
Featured work by Vidhita & Gaurav Kharkar · Mumbai · December 4, 2025
Located in the heart of Marine Lines- one of Mumbai’s most culturally layered and architecturally rich districts- Studio Foliage is a 1700 sqft dynamic office space crafted as a seamless blend of creativity, clarity, and contemporary sophistication. Designed as much for productivity as for inspiration, the workspace comprises private cabins, open workstations, a formal conference room, and informal lounges, each area thoughtfully planned to encourage flexibility, collaboration, and a distinctive identity. Surrounded by Art Deco facades, cafés, and the city’s creative pulse, the studio draws subtle cues from its context while creating an inward-looking environment that feels calm amid urban bustle.
The clients envisioned a workspace that would serve not only functional needs but also act as a visual portfolio of their values- innovation, quality, and cultural finesse. In response, the designers created a narrative where sculptural forms, bold color-blocking, and tactile elements merge effortlessly. The design language leans toward Neo-modernism with strong influences of Brutalism softened by mid-century silhouettes. Deep greens, burnt terracotta, and soft greys define a palette that brings warmth and depth, while fluted panels, embossed textures, and sculptural lighting add movement and visual rhythm.
Upon entering, visitors are welcomed into a serene reception and waiting area anchored by a sculptural display rack and soft seating. A mandir niche near the entrance reinforces spiritual grounding and aligns with Vastu principles- a theme subtly woven into the spatial planning. A linear workstation alley supports daily operations and directs movement toward the central circulation spine, which connects all areas cohesively. The main MD cabins were designed with distinct personalities: one exudes authority and calm with optimal natural light and an angled desk for command, while the second offers a more intimate, creative setting with curated accessories and a textured backdrop.
The conference room forms the heart of collective dialogue, equipped for presentations and strategy discussions with ergonomic seating, layered acoustics, and ambient lighting. Throughout the office, smart space planning ensures openness and efficiency, using vertical storage, floating workstations, and glass partitions to balance transparency and privacy. Materiality plays a central role- matte lacquers meet fluted MDF, terracotta-textured surfaces pair with polished laminates, and metal inlays harmonize with tinted glass, creating a refined yet grounded aesthetic.
Two elements emerge as showstoppers: the textured green cabinetry with its rhythmic vertical grooves, functioning as both artwork and storage, and the sculptural ceiling lights inspired by abstract foliage. Together, they echo the studio’s name- symbolizing growth, creativity, and natural rhythm. Studio Foliage stands as a narrative-driven workspace that celebrates balance, intention, and design innovation, offering not just an office but a sensory experience that nurtures ideas and elevates everyday work life.
