The Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One

At the Qila Rai Pithora Cultural Complex, The Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One, designed by Design Factory India under the leadership of Siddharth Bathla, unfolds as a rare convergence of history, spirituality, and spatial storytelling. Commissioned by the Ministry of Culture, the exhibition marks the historic return of the Piprahwa gem relics to India after 127 years—reinstating their cultural and sacred context. At its core lies an artefact-first approach, where the collection itself shapes both narrative and design. The repatriated relics from the emotional and conceptual nucleus, housed within a central stupa that anchors the entire spatial experience. Drawing from traditional Buddhist practices, movement through the exhibition follows a clockwise path—echoing parikrama—transforming circulation into ritual. The stupa is conceived as a contemplative volume. A stepped circular amphitheatre encourages pause and reflection, while subtle projections and controlled lighting create an immersive yet restrained atmosphere. Mirrored surfaces allow indirect engagement with the relics, preserving their sanctity while intensifying their presence. The journey begins with a ceremonial threshold, marked by a torana gateway and a Buddha sculpture that establishes a meditative tone. From here, galleries unfold in a layered narrative—ranging from orientation spaces to the Piprahwa excavation gallery and the showcase gallery, where artefacts are presented with precision and restraint. Sculptures, reliquaries, manuscripts, and paintings from institutions such as the National Museum and Indian Museum are placed in dialogue, revealing interconnected histories across time and geography. Material palettes remain subdued, allowing artefacts to take precedence, while lighting is meticulously calibrated to enhance detail without distraction. The result is an exhibition that balances scholarship with sensory engagement. More than a display, The Light and the Lotus becomes a space of quiet introspection—where design recedes, allowing the presence of relics, and their enduring spiritual resonance, to take centre stage.
