The Serene Edge

In the heart of Hyderabad’s ever-evolving landscape, the residence by Studio Nilasha stands as a testament to timeless design rooted in cultural nuance and quiet sophistication. Set on a sprawling three-acre site, the home draws inspiration from the city’s layered identity—where Qutb Shahi tombs coexist with glass-fronted tech parks—mirroring Hyderabad’s seamless dialogue between tradition and modernity. When Nilasha began work in 2020, the structure was merely a skeletal frame. The transformation demanded not just aesthetic clarity, but a complete reimagination of space, services, and spatial relationships. Guided by the homeowners’ brief—particularly the wife’s passion for Indian craftsmanship and art—the design evolved into a tranquil, art-infused sanctuary. The vision: to create a home that offers understated luxury while serving as a canvas for a curated art collection. The resulting residence exudes the ethos of a modern Indian farmhouse. Natural materials such as Kota stone, river quartz from the Ganges, and handcrafted brass accents by Sage Living form the textural palette. Antique furniture coexists with minimalist modern elements, creating an interplay of eras and aesthetics. This dialogue continues in the home’s fluid layout, which merges indoors with the surrounding landscape. During monsoon, the dining deck appears to hover over the glimmering lake, blurring the boundary between architecture and nature. Design collaborations added depth to the project. Sandeep Sangaru’s bespoke furniture—marked by clean lines, warm wood, and organic forms—reinforces the home’s narrative of subtle elegance. A standout is the dining table, inspired by the shape of a lotus leaf, which became a central piece in the home, honouring Indian design and symbolism. Arjun Rathi’s sculptural lighting installations, especially the Channapatna-inspired double-height piece near the staircase, bring a touch of whimsy and theatricality while complementing technical lighting for mood and function. Art remains at the core of the interiors. The central living area features floor-to-ceiling windows that allow light to animate curated artworks. A triangulated seating arrangement by Sangaru offers unobstructed views of the pieces, encouraging quiet reflection and interaction. Throughout the home, earthy tones—beige, ivory, warm taupe—set a serene backdrop for both the art and the architecture. Touches of vintage European grandeur—ornate brass doorknobs and a custom Art Deco mirror—speak to the clients’ eclectic taste, while the lake beyond becomes the home’s true centrepiece. Every design decision frames its shimmering presence, proving that in this house, beauty begins with context but transcends into a timeless celebration of craft, culture, and landscape.
